I first heard about Steve and his bicycle adventures around 10 years ago.  Intrigued, I joined his technomads email list, and have been following the development of the Microship since.

After moving to Seattle about 6 years ago, I began to learn how to sail and started messing about in a variety of small boats on Puget Sound and the lakes and rivers surrounding the city.  I currently own five boats: two kayaks, two small rowboats, and a 26' foot sailboat on which I live and am slowly restoring, but which hasn't done any sailing recently. I've also sailed a number of other small boats through a couple of sailing clubs in Seattle.

I recently purchased a folding kayak with a sailing rig, which I am in the process of testing to see if it might be suitable for the Microship Flotilla expedition.  I'm also hoping to add some form of pedal drive, for another alternative to paddling.

I named the kayak Origami, which roughly translates as "duck flavoring", from the Korean words ori, meaning duck, and gami, meaning flavoring or seasoning.  This is appropriate, since she gives me a small taste of life as a duck, floating and paddling along in the water. Of course, origami is also the Japanese art of paper folding, which might be somewhat related to kayak folding.

The first photo below shows the boat packed, with the three bags containing the kayak and sailing rig on a kayak cart.  A backpack with PFD, drysuit, and other gear is on the ground.  The other two show the boat assembled.
